The awards are one of the most prestigious events in the Scottish traditional music calendar – and fans are being given a chance from today to ensure their favourite acts are up for nomination for this year’s MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards.

The ceremony – set be hosted by Julie Fowlis, Mary Ann Kennedy and Tony Kearney – takes place on Saturday December 3 at Perth Concert Hall.

Those performing at the event include Peatbog Faeries, Skerryvore and Barbara Dickson, alongside budding musicians such as Kristen Harvey and the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland.

The awards celebrate the achievements of Scotland’s musicians and events across 19 categories, with 16 of these categories voted for by the public online – including Album of the Year, Composer of the Year, Event of the Year, Gaelic Singer of the Year and Up and Coming Artist of the Year.

Nominations for the shortlist will open today at www.handsupfortrad.co.uk/tradmusicawards and close on the 14th October – the full shortlist will be announced on Monday 31st October.

Event founder and promoter Simon Thoumire said: “This has been a particularly strong year for traditional music in Scotland so we’re excited to see the nominations as they pour in.

“As well as honouring some fantastic musicians, the event itself will once again be a fun packed night of performances from some of the stars of the scene and some incredible up and coming artists.”

Increasingly Scottish artists and companies are working internationally in a range of global territories. Showcasing events and international trade fairs such as SXSW and MIDEM are key gateways to working internationally and working with the international industry.

Creative Scotland have teamed up with the Cultural Enterprise Office and Scottish Music Industry Association to deliver an evening’s briefing and training on showcasing, that focuses specifically on two of the pre-eminent events: SXSW & MIDEM. The session will be part of a series of UK wide events during September delivered by UKTI in partnership with AIM, BPI, PRS for Music, MPA & PPL.

This event will be useful for any artist or band who are interesting in showcasing at SXSW and Midem but would also be valuable for: those looking towards other UK or international events; managers or management companies working with artists; labels; agents and the media.

Both MIDEM & SXSW also include strong interactive and digital elements so the event will be relevant for Scottish companies working in these areas. SXSW also has a film festival and although this will not be the focus, some aspects of the session could be relevant for people working in film.

SXSW & MIDEM Briefing

Tuesday 30 August 2011 @ ABC, Glasgow 7:15 – 9:30pm

Speakers confirmed so far…
Javier Lopez	UK Representative, Reed MIDEM
Una Johnston	UK & Ireland Representative, SXSW
Adam Armitt	Circular Records & Publishing, Artist Manager
Robin Morton	LoFi Management & LoFi Records (Admiral Fallow)
Phil Patterson	UKTI Music Specialist
Stuart Thomas	Creative Scotland
Shaun Arnold goNORTH

The session will cover the major aspects of both events including SXSW Interactive, the application process, selection, planning & preparation, budgeting, the visa process, when to attend, advice on getting the most out of these events and selecting the best time to apply.

Admission is free but spaces are limited so booking is essential.
